James is a red mixed-traffic tender engine, designated as number 5 on the North Western Railway in the "Thomas & Friends" franchise. Created by Wilbert Awdry, he is known for his distinctive scarlet paintwork and often displays a proud, vain, and boastful personality, though he is also a hard-working and kind-hearted engine. He first appeared in "The Railway Series" books and was formally introduced in the television series episode "Thomas and the Breakdown Train".
