Amtrak, officially the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, is the national intercity passenger railroad company of the United States. It was created by the U.S. Congress in 1970, with national operations commencing on May 1, 1971, to provide high-quality, safe, and on-time rail passenger service. Amtrak operates a network serving over 500 destinations across 46 states, the District of Columbia, and three Canadian provinces.
