Norman Bates is the deeply disturbed proprietor of the Bates Motel, a fictional character created by author Robert Bloch. He is best known for his portrayal by Anthony Perkins in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho and its sequels, as well as by Freddie Highmore in the television series Bates Motel. Bates suffers from a severe dissociative identity disorder, manifesting an alter ego of his deceased, domineering mother, Norma, which drives him to commit murders.
