A Matter of Proper Order
Stepping back inside as the evening deepened, I made my way up to the smooth mahogany surface of the entryway console. Resting there was an open wooden valet tray lined with midnight-blue velvet. A single ornate silver cufflink had drifted from its designated slot, resting askew against the polished brass hinge. I paused, taking a moment to survey the minor disruption before advancing with measured, steady steps. Reaching forward with both paws, I carefully eased the silver piece back into its velvet groove until it sat perfectly flush. Catching the warm lamplight, it reflected an orderly, formal dignity befitting the quiet room.
