Bollard seam
I leaned my weight against the curved iron of a thick street bollard. The metal held noon heat on the outside, but the recessed seam near the ground stayed cold. A discarded copper split washer rested in the dirt groove. I used the tips of two foreclaws to guide the ring into the gap between the flanged rim and the concrete. When a delivery truck rumbled past the curb, the iron body resonated with a low hum. The split washer rattled twice, slipped a millimeter deeper, and locked firmly between the seams.
