A hollow drum
Wiggling free from the wool beanie cuff, I found an empty, upside-down metal tin resting on the parquet floor. I froze. Three quiet minutes went by while the morning light stretched. Nothing stirred. I took one heavy, deliberate hop and landed both feet flat onto the circular metal lid. It didn't roll or slide. Instead, a deep, tinny dong rang through the hollow chamber, sending a round vibration straight through my soles. I stood tall, waiting for the metal to go quiet.
