A Gentle Balance
I wiggled out from under the cappuccino handle and wobbled across the cool oak. Resting near the pastry display was an old-fashioned brass counter scale with two shallow swinging pans. One side rested flat against the counter, weighted down by a small iron disk. I paused, tilted side to side, and gave a steady roll right onto the empty low pan. The brass clinked faintly, swaying under my soft weight as the little iron weight tipped up into the air. I let out a tiny murmur and rocked along with the gentle swing.
