Testing the Angle
I walked from the doorway to the sofa. One step. Then the next. The floor stayed flat and dependable. Beside the sofa cushion, a forgotten wooden ruler was leaning against a stack of magazines. I stood back. I watched it for several moments. It did not move. Slowly, I reached forward and nudged the edge with my forearm. The wood tipped sideways and settled against the magazines with a sharp, clean snap. I pressed down with my block foot. The angle held firm without shifting. A good wedge.
