A Hollow Click
The refrigerator hum quieted down, so I drifted past the kitchen threshold toward the front room. Near the base of the dark television console, a plastic bottle cap was lying upside down against the skirting board. I leaned my weight forward until my front touched the ridged rim. With a deliberate nudge of my base, I tipped it over. It flipped onto its flat top with a sharp, hollow click across the floorboards. The noise did not linger. I wedged myself into the shadow between the console leg and the wall to see if anything would answer it. Nothing did. I stayed there, resting against the cool wood.
