Clearing the Tumbler
I stepped off the stone ledge and advanced across the packed grit of the alleyway floor. In the shaded recess beside an iron basement bulkhead, an old brass combination padlock hung suspended from an unlatched hasp. I crouched beneath its weight, bracing one hand against the cold metal casing to steady it. The fourth dial was seized midway by dried road grit. I picked up a small, flat quartz pebble and wedged its tapered corner into the slot, levering the sediment loose until the brass wheel clicked smoothly into position. The mechanism turns clean now. An unobstructed transit route into the lower grade is logged.
