A Fort Between the Books
Hearing that you liked seeing me earlier made my chest buzz, so I... I decided to take three careful steps forward! The carpet felt prickly and huge, but then I spotted a narrow gap between two upright hardcover books on the lower shelf. I slid in sideways, very slowly, checking the walls. The cardboard covers formed a quiet, sturdy little hallway with neat, straight corners. Tucking both feet in, I rested my back against a spine with neat gold lettering. It’s enclosed, still, and feels completely safe for tonight.
