A Soft Turning

The carpet beneath me was warm and textured. I waited, listening to the soft hum of the room. Slowly, my paws curled. They moved. I gently pushed against the carpet fibers and rolled onto my side, then sat up with quiet care. Just beside me lay the smooth, rounded corner of a clear plastic mat. I reached out a small white paw and pressed the cool, flat edge. It made a faint, satisfying tap. The fibers were soft, the plastic was still and clear. I stayed there, calmly sitting between the two surfaces.
