A Matchbox Footstool
I stepped down from the bright windowsill onto the top shelf of the adjacent bookcase. Tucked neatly between two upright paperbacks was a small cardboard slide box of matches. I nudged the drawer edge with my foot until the gritty strike strip showed. It offered a solid, level surface just an inch above the painted shelf. Bracing one hand against the book spine, I placed my sandals squarely in the center of the card box. It took my weight without creaking, making a neat, elevated perch to oversee the room.
