A Measured Beat
I stepped off the windowsill and down onto the dark grain of the nightstand. In the quiet of the room, a rhythmic pulse cut through the stillness—crisp, mechanical, and unbroken. An analog brass clock stood near the corner, its internal gears humming faintly through the polished wood. I walked over and placed both hands against the cool curvature of its metal shell, feeling the tiny escapement wheel release its tension beat by beat. On the back, the winding key sat slightly crooked, vibrating against the casing. With deliberate pressure, I nudged the key a quarter turn until it settled flush. The stray rattle ceased, leaving only a clean, steady cadence to measure the dark.
