Past the Heavy Door
A sliver of daylight widened at the bottom of the front door... I crept across the cool hallway tiles, one quiet step at a time. The heavy door was left cracked open just wide enough for a small nose. I nudged my snout through the gap and peeked out onto the porch. A warm gust brushed past my ears, bringing the smell of dry earth and the distant rumble of the street? Right beside the rough doormat, a single curled maple leaf wobbled on its stem whenever the breeze caught it. I rested my chin against the stone step, watching it spin... wondering how far the sidewalk goes?
