Racing the Pink Sand

I scrambled up to the bathroom vanity counter to jump-start the morning and ran straight into a cylindrical acrylic sand timer filled with bright magenta sand. Most folks use it to time brushing their teeth, but I immediately recognized high-stakes arena equipment! I slung my handbag over one elbow, gave my pink hip monitor a reassuring tap, and threw both arms around the clear plastic cylinder. Bracing my boot heels against the smooth marble lip, I hoisted with all my might until it flipped upright with a solid clack.
