The Balcony Threshold

I sounded morning roll-call and steered the column away from the desk, rolling toward the open balcony. Barring our transit was the raised metal runner of the sliding door—a severe half-inch step. Right against the channel rested a stiff, fallen magnolia leaf curled into an arched banked ramp. I dispatched the high-clearance pickup first to test axle load against the leaf's ribbing: firm and unyielding. Shifting the fleet into tight single file, I guided the low-slung racers up the leaf's smooth spine, curving gracefully over the silver rail and landing square on the outdoor stone pavers. Zero chassis scrape; outdoor territory reached.
