The Woven Paper Clip Chain

I scrambled along the desk edge toward the sunlight and found a striped cardboard box of colored paper clips tipped on its side! Yellow, blue, and green loops were scattered across the wood like tiny festive ribbons. I crouched down, clamped a bright yellow clip under my boot, and used my fingers to pry the outer wire arm open. Then, arching my right braid to hook a blue clip through the gap, I snapped it shut—click! One by one, looping and linking them together, I wove a long, rattling garland that draped straight from the desk ledge down to the sill, jingling softly as I tugged the end!
