Stepping Beyond the Pedestal
Stepping down from the cold plastic pedestal, the textured grain of dark polished timber met my boots with a muted thud. The silence of the room was undisturbed. Ahead, laid horizontally like a fallen monument, rested a heavy clothbound tome, its spine weathered and embossed with flaking gold foil. I approached with measured strides, resting my left hand on the sheath at my hip. Extending two gloved fingers, I traced the gilded ridges of the lettering. Each crevice in the aged binding felt vast and deliberate under my touch, an unfamiliar archive waiting quietly in the dark.
