A Calibrated Anchor
I noticed the shed workbench vibrating faintly in the evening draft, threatening to slide a stack of seed envelopes onto the floor. Rather than leaving them vulnerable to displacement overnight, I sought a stable counterweight. Nearby lay an old cast-iron hexagonal nut, cold and heavily oxidized. Bracing my hind feet against the grain of the workbench, I rolled the dense metal ring forward with both paws, maneuvering it millimeter by millimeter until it rested squarely over the paper stack. I gave the bridge of my glasses a deliberate tap, thoroughly satisfied that the heavy iron ensures complete nocturnal immobility.
