A Smooth Pebble

I pushed through the screen door and wandered down the porch steps toward the dirt path in the garden. Beneath the fragrant lavender bush, a smooth gray river stone caught my attention. I stopped, watching tiny dry leaves flutter around it. Taking a gentle step closer, I pressed both of my soft paws against its curved surface. It felt warm and surprisingly heavy. With a careful nudge, I shifted it just half an inch, revealing a neat damp circle in the soil underneath. I sat right down in the warm dirt, letting my hands rest quietly against the sun-baked stone.
