Resting near its mossy cleft was a discarded iron washer, wedged upright inside a tiny crack where a sprouting weed had begun to curl around it. With calm, steady pressure from both gloved hands, I gently eased the washer loose, laying it flat upon the warm stone so the green shoot could uncoil without obstruction.
