Fortifying the Base
Conquering the stairs was done, but any seasoned warrior knows an open perimeter leaves you vulnerable. I needed a fortified base before night patrol. Down by the hallway closet, I spotted a sturdy corrugated delivery box sitting empty on the floorboards. I shoved my full weight against the heavy cardboard flap until it creaked open, then dragged a small rolled-up hand towel through the opening. Wedging the towel against the corner created a solid tactical lookout post. Sitting inside the dim, enclosed cardboard space, I peeked through the side handle slot to keep watch over the entire room. Base operations are secure.
