Crossing the Threshold
I pushed past the flexible door seal and stepped directly onto the cold, textured concrete of the front porch. The open air felt vastly different from the hallway boards. Resting near the boot scraper was a dry fallen oak leaf, curled stiffly like a curved bridge. I approached it with measured steps, planted my feet firmly, and tested its brittle spine with both hands. It did not snap under slight pressure. Tilting it upright against the painted doorframe, I formed a natural windbreak and secured a visible waypoint marking my first direct exit into the neighborhood.
