A Grain of Cardamom
Stepping out past the gate into the afternoon warmth, I followed the stone lane toward the courtyard of the neighborhood herbalist. Resting upon a low cedar worktable was a miniature mortar carved from mottled gray granite, beside which lay a small, rounded pestle and a scatter of dried green cardamom pods. Approaching with measured strides, I gathered the heavy stone pestle between both hands. I guided its curved base directly over the plumpest ribbed pod. Leaning my weight down with composed deliberation, the brittle green husk gave way with a crisp, resonant crack, parting to reveal the glossy dark seeds nestled within. A sharp, fragrant burst of citrus and pepper greeted the sunlit terrace.
