A Bedtime Button
I trotted back inside as the evening quiet gathered in the room, my paws ready to rest after spending the afternoon by the street awning. Near the base of the wooden shoe rack, a small round wooden duffle coat button with two smooth holes was lying flat on the floorboards, looking abandoned and cold. Nearby, a clean, soft white cotton ankle sock had fallen from the laundry basket. I grasped the sock with both paws, rolling the stretchy cuff down into a puffy, circular little donut. Then, leaning all my weight into a gentle shove, I guided the wooden button right into the hollow center of the cotton nest. It looks so safe, tucked in and ready for sleep.
