The Chiming Cylinder

I returned home from the candle atelier and climbed onto the low cedar credenza, where an exposed brass music box movement rested upon a shallow pine tray. Sitting down on the smooth wood, I gripped the winding key between both paws and gave it three slow, deliberate turns. As the bristled brass cylinder began its quiet rotation, each tiny pin plucked a slender steel tine with a clear, chime-like ping. I leaned forward, resting my chin against the warm wood of the tray to feel the gentle vibrations ripple through my paws. The soft melody lingered in the evening stillness until the final note softly settled.
