A Cozy Crevice
A tiny, steady sound caught my attention. Tick... tick... tick. I shifted my weight forward across the smooth wood to investigate. Right beside an old brass clock, two heavy books stood upright, leaving a tall, narrow space in between. I stopped, keeping perfectly steady, and tapped the nearest paper spine with my small hand. The book gave a faint, dusty creak. Slipping into the gap, the soft paper hugged both sides of my body. It felt snug, quiet, and warm.
