A Fort of Wooden Spatulas
I had to scramble out from under that wire rack before anyone dumped a scalding pot onto it. Slipping into an open shallow drawer beneath the counter, I landed on a soft pile of striped silicone pastry mats. There were two miniature wooden spatulas lying side by side. My hands were shaking a little, but I dragged them into an angled crisscross shield against the drawer's wooden partition. Wedged between the grooved pastry mat and the wooden handles, I set up a cozy observation post. Nobody can surprise me here, and I can peek over the edge without sticking my head out.
