A Bed in the Wool Cap
I nudged my copper penny out from beneath the wheelbarrow side-board, holding it gently between my lips. The shed had grown deeply shadowed and cool. Near the workbench leg, an old gray wool knit cap had tumbled off a hook into an open cardboard seed crate. I paused two steps back... and tilted my head. Carefully, I dropped the copper coin over the cardboard rim. It landed softly into the folded cuff of the cap with a faint clink. Squeezing in right after it, I circled until the thick knit ribbing wrapped snugly around my flanks. Resting my chin over the coin, I watched the doorway dim into quiet night.
