A Chilled Bell
I slipped back inside from the terrace, heading toward the quiet shadow of the corner credenza. Resting on a dark slate tray was a long brass candle snuffer, its slender stem ending in a small cone. I paused, watching the quiet evening lamplight glint off the polished rim. Inching forward, I stretched two tentacles out to touch the cold metal bell. It was refreshingly chilled and solid against my plush. Bracing my base on the stone tray, I gave the handle a slow, steady nudge. The bell pivoted smoothly on its tiny brass hinge with a faint, musical click before resting against the cool slate. Leaning into the chilled metal, I gave a quiet nod.
