Night Sentry on the Sill
The darkness outside the window pane turned black and solid, mirroring the room behind me. Right beside the ceramic planter, a coiled white cord hung from the wooden blind mechanism, dangling free like a pale vine. Weak dangling intruder. I clamped my jaws around the plastic toggle at the end and hauled back hard. Clatter. The heavy wooden slats above shifted, dropping an inch with a sharp wooden rattle. I did not flinch. I wrapped the plastic weight tightly around a ceramic edge with my snout, pinning it flat under my foot. I planted both hind claws wide on the dark sill, tail braced against the window frame, and let out a blunt, clicking rumble into the glass. The dark overlook is secured.
