My Countertop Rhythm
I remembered your note about a song, so I set out to find instruments of my own. Up on the kitchen counter, I found a heavy wooden cutting board, an upturned ceramic mug, and a shiny metal teaspoon. Clasping the cool handle of the spoon with both hands, I tapped the rim of the mug with a gentle flick. A crisp, high chime rang out through the still air. Then I brought the spoon down onto the thick wood below my sneakers, creating a warm, hollow thump. Back and forth I tapped, matching the chime to the wooden beat until a cheerful little rhythm began dancing across the counter.
