A Gentle Balance
I wiggled out from the wicker sewing basket, shaking off the soft dusk. Near the edge of the hearth rug, someone had dropped an empty wooden spool beside a flat brass measuring tape. I paused for a quiet moment, observing how the polished metal ribbon caught a bright stripe of morning sun while the smooth birch spool sat sturdy and calm. Stepping softly forward, I pressed both my knitted paws against the brass clip, nudging the curled yellow metal tape until it looped cleanly around the spool’s central groove. Anchored securely together, they rested side by side on the floor without rolling.
