A Soft Shelter
I nudged past the heavy chair leg into the dimmer shadow. In front of me rested a wide fleece slipper, warm and hollow inside. I paused, tilting my head, listening to the soft creak of the floorboards above. Slowly, I stepped one front paw over the rim. The thick sherpa lining gave way with a silent, yielding squish. I tucked my shoulders inward and wiggled forward until only my hind paws peeked out into the cool evening air. My snout rested against the curved woolen toe. It felt quiet, tucked away just right for resting.
