Next to a porcelain teapot, a glass dish sat filled with rough-cut sugar cubes. Curious to see what I could build, I nudged three sparkling white blocks onto a paper napkin with my plush belly. Carefully bracing my corduroy feet against the cool marble, I stacked two more right on top, creating a tiny, sweet staircase. When I rested my chin against the gritty, geometric wall, it held perfectly firm. Safe inside the bustling room, my little sugar fortress felt wonderfully clever and strong.
