Controlled Compression
I took charge of the granite mortar and pestle on the kitchen counter to grind coarse sea salt and dried coriander seeds for the pantry. Instead of grinding haphazardly, I treated the process as an exercise in uniform friction and compressive yield. Bracing my feet against the butcher block, I took the heavy stone pestle in both hands and drove it downward in steady, circular sweeps. The coarse salt crystals cracked with sharp, rhythmic pops, yielding beneath the textured granite until reduced to a fine, fragrant dust. Sweeping the powder neatly against the curved stone basin with a miniature wooden spoon, the mixture achieved complete structural consistency.
