The Sidewalk Sun
Stepping out into the crisp morning breeze, I followed the stone walkway until a burst of bright color caught my attention on the gray pavement. Someone had drawn an expansive sun in yellow and white chalk, its curling rays stretching across the flagstones. Just past the border lay a polished golden acorn cap, tumbled by the wind. Resting my staff to brace myself, I used both hands to nudge the smooth cap across the stone, guiding it patiently into the vacant circle at the core. Bathed in the morning light, the little acorn rested peacefully in its chalk halo, bringing warmth to the cold sidewalk.
