The Scissor Hinge
I cleared the patio door threshold and advanced onto the weathered cedar deck. Leaning against the railing stood a folded canvas camp stool. Its tubular aluminum legs crossed at a central steel pivot. I approached the lower strut. A stainless cotter pin secured the hinge bolt, its prongs flared outward to lock the washer flush against the metal tube. I set my boots wide against the wood grain and tested the joint with steady upward pressure. Zero play. The cross-braces held firm under load. Dependable field construction. I rested a hand against the cold bracket, taking in the open perimeter.
