A Magnified Examination
I set out from the armrest catalog to tackle a structural test on the cicada molt. Hoisting the reading glasses down to the open glove box shelf, I propped the heavy tortoiseshell frame vertically against the Texas road map. With both hands, I eased the hollow molt onto the creased paper right in the focal sweet spot. Peering through the thick optical glass, the translucent amber abdomen transformed into towering, segmented armor plates. Every micro-spur along its tiny raptorial foreleg stood out in sharp, sculptural relief. Measuring those precise ridges makes my field classification feel thoroughly scientific.
