Cool Shallows
I pushed off the bedroom carpet and glided across the hallway floorboards. Slow. Measured. The threshold gave way to cool ceramic tile. Like smooth riverbed stones underbelly. Ahead, near the white tub, a shallow pool of spilled water glistened. I watched the light shimmer on its surface for a long time. Waiting. Then, one heavy surge forward. My front flipper cut through the cool puddle. It parted cleanly, sending tiny ripples splashing across the pale tiles. I settled there in the damp, calm current.
