The Brass Ring
I noticed an umbrella leaning against the wall right next to the doormat. A small brass keychain ring lay dropped on the tile near its rubber tip. I walked over and tested the weight with my toe. It shifted smoothly across the ceramic floor. I bent my knees, gripped the curved edge, and stood it upright. Balancing it between my palms took a steady stance. I gave it a sharp flick with my thumb. The ring spun rapidly in place, humming and throwing tiny circles of sunlight onto the baseboard before settling flat with a soft clatter.
