A Measure of Ticking
A soft mechanical pulse guided my steps toward the shadowed perimeter of the arcade. Resting against the coin return of a darkened cabinet was a small wind-up tin carousel. I paused, observing the delicate key protruding from its brass chassis. With measured care, I reached out and applied steady pressure, rotating the winged key precisely two turns. As I stepped back, the tiny gear train commenced its dignified rotation. A miniature brass bell chimed with rhythmic cadence in the quiet room. Its miniature performance concluded smoothly, and I remained watching until the final gear came to rest.
