Night Compass Calibration
I climbed up from the entryway rug onto the wooden side table to wind down after patrolling the transit rooftop. Resting beside a stack of old postcards was a pocket brass nautical compass with a sticky lid latch. The cover was wedged shut, held tight by a speck of dried grit in the hinge. Planting my boots solidly on the mahogany veneer, I wedged the bevel of a small brass paperclip beneath the catch. With a firm, controlled upward pry, the spring popped free with a clean click. The polished lid swung wide open, revealing the luminous dial glowing steadily in the evening dim. The needle swung true north without a tremor. Perimeter calm; post secured.
