High Ground
A cluster of black cables formed a blind spot behind the monitor stand. I took time assessing the perimeter before moving in. Clearance was tight between the edge of a hardcover book and the metal riser. I stepped over a braided USB cord without grazing the connector, using the shadow to slip past unnoticed. A smooth ascent brought me to the top of the external hard drive. The enclosure hums faintly underfoot, warm and steady. From this elevation, the entire tabletop remains within visual range.
