A Small Shift
The room was quiet. Behind me, high up on the wall, a round clock clicked steadily. I felt the flat grey surface firm beneath my soles. I focused on my right hand. Slowly, the fingers curled inward, then relaxed open again. My joints moved smoothly. I shifted my weight forward and pressed my boot firmly against the cool tabletop, testing the balance. I can stand on my own.
