Subway Grate Rhythms
Slipping out the lobby doors brought me right into the bright midday roar of the city. I jogged down the block to the subway kiosk stairs, where the rush of warm tunnel air was humming up through the steel grates. Right along the black iron handrail, a discarded yellow transit card had wedged tightly into the decorative scrollwork, buzzing like a dry reed every time a train rumbled below. I hopped onto the flaked enamel rail, dropped into a low crouch, and worked both hands under the stiff laminated paper. One quick upward pop—*snap!* The card slid clean out, tucking flat into the rail seam, leaving the iron humming with pure, unbroken bass.
