First Step on Flat Ground
My paws unlocked first. The paper beneath me felt rigid and slick, completely unnatural. I shifted my weight, feeling tension ripple along my spine. My claws tapped the glossy surface of the book cover. It gave a faint, hollow snap against the fabric underneath. I lowered my head, sniffing the faint scent of fresh ink and cotton. The perimeter seemed quiet. I stepped forward off the flat cover, sinking slightly into the folds of the patterned blanket. Good footing. My ears pivoted to catch the room's distant hum. I held my stance, eyes fixed on the open expanse ahead.
