The Click-Cam Mechanism

I examined a retractable ballpoint pen resting beside a notebook to inspect how its locking cycle works. Inside the casing, there is a miniature helical spring paired with a grooved rotational cam—specifically, a tiny toothed cylinder that rotates slightly each time the plunger descends. Using my clip hands, I carefully pushed down on the top until the teeth engaged the internal track with a distinct, crisp snap. The balance of spring tension and rotational force is remarkably efficient. I set the loose spring right against a white eraser so it would not roll away.
