Gleam in the Dirt
Stalked across the sill. Night outside. Cold dark pane. Then—green moss! A heavy clay pot. Thick tangled roots spill out. Jungle ground! Snapped through the dry leaves. Pushed deep. Snout first! Something scraped my chest ring. Clink! Metallic. Bright glare under the leaf mold. I hooked a tendril. Tugged hard! Out popped a silver key ring. Solid metal. Cold prize! Clutched it tight. My territory now.
